South African Film Industry – cast

I am going to highlight over the next few weeks the extraordinary talent pool coming out of South Africa, people I have worked with and have first hand experience of seeing their persona’s on set and how they deal with scripts and their roles

My first power couple is Connie and Shona Ferguson, sadly tho Shona passed this year.

Shona’s passing earlier this year still rocks me, he was and is one special person who was destined for far greater heights. Not only was he a great actor but more importantly he is and was a great human being. He has certainly left a hole in the South African Film Industry, however I am sure his legacy will live on for many years to come.

As a DIRECTOR I worked with Connie and Shona on over 10 commercial shoots, sometimes with their entire family featuring in commercial. This was always a wonderful experience. They are true professionals, always well prepared and always prepared to adapt as situations evolved.

Shona’s love his craft and his dedication and hard work led to his final series which is on Netflix, ‘Kings of Jo’burg’ which I am sure was to be the start of many more before he was robbed of further acclaim. This series showcases the immense talent not just technically but creatively and the how the acting has evolved in South Africa. African film is on the rise and new faces are emerging and new talent popping up that is sure to see Africa as a premiere film producing destination as opposed to a service industry where foreign film makers shot in Africa but brought all their cast.

The Fergusons identified a key element, and that’s the value of story, and how a great script evolves and forms the foundation of a great film. Between Shona and Connie their wealth of knowledge and experience has led them to be two of the top African film makers and actors that I have had the privilege of working with.

Boomtown Films, my SA company is one of many companies that are working towards producing excellence, growing the industry and developing new talent. Boomtown now had four features that they have been involved in as PRODUCERS in either their own Capacity or as a company THE PERFECT WAVE * SAMSON * VAN DER MERWE * and more recently REDEEMING LOVE which was facilitated by Advantage Entertainment. The Industry offers such great rebates for both local and Foreign films, that South Africa remains a top destination for films to be shot.

Currently I am in Dubai, working for Boomtown-Productions, a premiere film production company with strong ties with Boomtown Cape Town. I am here to assist CEO Shane Martin develop long form projects both to produce and facilitate,

Telling meaningful stories whether they shorts or features is what gets me out of bed every day. Passionate about those captured in slavery. Biographical films (The Perfect wave with Scott Eastwood) and (Biblical epic Samson with the late Rutger Hauer, Jackson Rathbone, Billy Zane and Taylor James) My recent short films Beat The Curve, Sex Tourism Labour have been awarded best shorts across the globe in 2020.
