Love locks

I thought I would quickly run out of stories , but there are stories all around us all every day, so many interesting puzzle pieces in the lives of people that are so worth telling.

On my walk yesterday to the Monastery of Serra do Pilar , situated in Vila Nova de Gai we found these love locks, that overlook the Dom Luis Bridge and the Douro River and the tourist area of Porto. This is worth visiting, the view is insane and the significance of the Monastery is humbling. To think that these sites were built many decades ago, is unimaginable.

“A love lock,” is public fixture to symbolise sweethearts love for one another. Typically the names or initials are inscribed on the lock, and its key is thrown away to symbolise unbreakable love. What a significant act between lovers.

In Rome, the ritual of affixing love padlocks to the bridge Ponte Milivio can be attributed to the 2006 book, ‘I want you’ by Italian author Frederico Moccia, who made film adaption in 2007 “Ho Voglia di te” popularising this symbol of commitment. I think I am going to try and watch the movie!!!

So some places are so special that you need to visit twice, so LOVE LOCKS called me back to place my own lock with my amazing wife of 33 odd years, and we to will throw the kets away, signifying an unbreakable commitment to one another :

I lived with my grandparents for many years and what struck me was they never spoke about their material wealth but always shared about their memories that they created as though they were yesterday, – it taught me to build a life full of memories, and thats the journey we are on.
