Not all days are good days

Yesterday I missed home, I missed all the things I know and that have been such a big part of our lives, my family, our friends our beautiful Noordhoek and my surf spot Muizenberg, especially as winter approaches and the NW winds make it the finest wave for a long-boarder.

Arriving in a country where you literally know nobody does present you with tough days, – you enter the unknown and literally need to start again, and its impossible to replace special friendships, that you’ve built over a lifetime, so you need to get your mind around this and know you are adding to your life not replacing the old with the new.

Then there are the amazing achievements of a career that were built over decades, and the amazing people that helped you along the way. These although are big achievements are the past and new stories need to be written and told.

So todays choice is simple, remind yourself that your past although special is the past and yes it’s shaped you into who you are , but today is a new day and you only have one life and live each day to its full. I need to find my purpose here.

We chose Porto or Porto chose us, we here, and I need to step into the Film Industry, make friends in the Surf community, join a Church community and learn Portuguese.

As a creative there is so much stimulation here in Porto and Portugal, I will capture new images and tell new stories as I await projects to be green-lit in South Africa.

Telling meaningful stories whether they shorts or features is what gets me out of bed every day. Passionate about those captured in slavery. Biographical films (The Perfect wave with Scott Eastwood) and (Biblical epic Samson with the late Rutger Hauer, Jackson Rathbone, Billy Zane and Taylor James) My recent short films Beat The Curve, Sex Tourism Labour have been awarded best shorts across the globe in 2020.

  1. Only natural to feel homesick as you are african by birth and its a strong stamp on you and the family. But you have the resilience to survive and it won’t be long before your blog has pictures of new found friends and favorite surfing spots. So take advantage of the warmer summer weather and continue to send your interesting daily experiences. There’s the old adage ‘there’s no place like home’ and life is what you make of it so go for all the goals you have set.
